On Saturday, the University of New Haven Chargers’ track and field team competed in the Yale Giegengack Invitational.
New Haven had an all-around great day as multiple Chargers put up stellar numbers in their respective events.
In the women’s shot put, five Chargers had strong performances. Freshman Sereana Vulaona finished in 16th place after she recorded 9.37 meters on the first attempt, 11.27 meters for the second, and 9.90 meters to finish the event. Sophomores Alanah Weaver and Ashley Craig placed 20th and 21st, respectively. Weaver’s attempts measured in at 10.95, 10.39 and 10.43 meters while Craig’s best shot put of the day was 10.85 meters on her third attempt. Junior Vanessa Connolly placed 25th after throwing 10.44 meters on her second attempt. Freshman Abigail Cunningham finished in 27th place and measured 7.16 meters on her third attempt of the day.
In the men’s weight throw, three Chargers finished with outstanding performances. Leading the way for New Haven, junior Jimmy Oreste finished in eighth place after two throws that measured 14.41 and 16.40 meters, respectively. Sophomore Jonah Aguiar threw 14.58 meters and finished in 13th place. Sophomore Richard Fortune finished the placements for the Chargers, with his best throw recorded at 13.08 meters which earned him 20th place.
In the men’s 60m hurdles, sophomore Amir Phelmetto dominated for the Chargers, placing sixth out of 15 racers. Phelmetto qualified with a time of 8.38 seconds. In the men’s 200m, freshman Daniel Nixon placed 17th out of 35 with a time of 23.11 seconds. He was not the only Charger to have a strong performance in this event, as freshman Ameir Osman ran 23.83 seconds which earned him 29th place. Junior Vonntae Martin placed 32nd after he finished in 24.41 seconds.
Martin also ran in the men’s 400m, and finished 19th out of 23 with a time of 56.36 seconds. His first heat was clocked in at 26.00 seconds flat which earned him third overall in his respective heat.
In the men’s 3000m, three Chargers put together big showings for New Haven. Freshman Connor Knee finished in 18th place with a time of 9:00.53. Not too far behind was senior William Brown with a 9:26.31 time. Finishing the event for New Haven was junior James Comisky with a time of 9:40.75 which earned him 24th place.
The Chargers are preparing for the NE10 Conference Championship which will take place all day on Feb. 22 and 23. The championship will be held in Boston, Mass. at The Track at New Balance. For more information on next week’s events, visit newhavenchargers.com
