For the week of Nov. 15, the Office of Student Activities and Sodexo paired up for a Week of Giving. Starting on Monday, OSA and Sodexo gave thanks to students and faculty, and offered the campus opportunities to give back to the community.
On Monday and Wednesday at the Office of Student Activities, students and organizations were able to sponsor Thanksgiving Baskets. Costing $99 each, students were encouraged to find a group to split the cost in order to give to a good cause. Each basket was made with the intent to feed 12 to 14 people. Sodexo was in charge of making the baskets and later delivering them to the New Haven Public Health Department the day before Thanksgiving. USGA gave out points for clubs and organizations that participated.
On Wednesday in Bartels, Sodexo sponsored a full Thanksgiving dinner for students and faculty. Even commuters were able to participate. The first 50 commuter students were given a free meal. All other students with meal plans were charged a swipe for the traditional turkey dinner.
On Thursday, two activities were held in the Student Dining Room in Bartels for anyone interested in giving back to UNH alumni and to help with the Midnight Run.
Students wrote thank-you cards to alumni who have made donations to the University. Donors were organized by their degrees and colleges, as well as extracurricular activities, such as sports, so that those writing the cards could relate more to the alumni and truly show their gratitude for how the alumni have impacted the University.
To help with the Midnight Run, students prepared and packaged peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that would later be distributed at the New Haven Green to the homeless.
Closing off the Thanksgiving Week of Service on Friday, Food for Fines offered students with fines such as parking tickets and library fines to be forgiven with the trade of canned goods. Food was given to the Office of Student Activities to be donated to a local charity and one fee was forgiven per student.
