WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women’s lacrosse team, led by a five goal performance by Alexis Gabbe, defeated American International College 17-1 Tuesday afternoon at Kayo Field. With the win the Chargers improved to 7-5 overall and 5-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Yellow Jackets fell to 4-7 on the season and 1-6 in the NE-10.
The Chargers jumped out to an early lead at Kayo Field on Tuesday. Sarah Magnone scored a goal from Marissa Fisher just 25 seconds into the opening half. Just over one minute later, Alexis Gabbe put the Chargers up 2-0 off an 8-meter goal. New Haven would rattle off another six unanswered goals, including two more from Gabbe and two from Kristine Curry, to take an 8-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets scored their only goal with 3:19 left in the first half to bring the score to 8-1 at the midway point.
UNH would score another nine goals in the second half to win the game by a final score of 17-1. The Chargers’ defense held AIC scoreless through the second half and secured their seventh win of the season.
Gabbe scored two more second-half goals and finished with five total. The junior also recorded two draw controls. Curry and Carolina Marrero each added three goals in the win, while Marrero also dished out one assist. Emily Buckley-Matura led the team with four ground balls, while Natalie Lieberman grabbed a team-high six draw controls to go with one goal. In the goal for UNH, Maureen Spellman recorded seven saves, while allowing just one goal.
As a team, UNH successful on 13-of-15 clear attempts and held a 15-5 edge in draw controls.
New Haven’s next game is set for Saturday, April 16 when they travel to Southern New Hampshire University for another NE-10 showdown. Game time in Manchester is set for 1 p.m.
