Over the weekend, New Haven traveled to Waltham, Massachusetts to compete in the Sandy Hoffman Memorial tournament. Over the two-day tournament, the Chargers faced American International College (AIC), Daemen University, and Bentley University.
Starting the tournament, New Haven faced the American International Yellow Jackets, winning the close game 3-2.
In the first set, the Chargers fell short to the Yellow Jackets 26-24. Outside hitter GraceJuergens led the team with 6kills followed by outside hitter Macy Brown, with four of herown. In the second set, AIC again took a 26-24 advantage over New Haven. The Chargers began their comeback in the third set, defeating the Yellow Jackets 26-24. Late in the set, AIC had four straight errors, putting New Haven in the lead. In the fourth set, New Haven came back from an eight-point deficit and won the set 25-20. Heading into the fifth set for the tiebreaker, the Chargers came back from a four-point deficit and defeated the Yellow Jackets 15-12. New Haven had a totalof 56 kills, countered to AICwith 66. Setters Juli DeAcharan and Tori Burton had a totalof forty-seven assists between them.
Following their win against AIC, the Chargers faced the Daemen University Wildcats but fell short 3-2.
New Haven started off the first set with a three – point lead and then went back and forth until the Wildcats secured the advantage, 25-21. In the second set, New Haven went on a spree and finished with a seven – point advantage over Daemen, 25-18. Unable to keep the rally alive, New Haven set back in the start of the third, leading to the Wildcats taking the set 25-21. During the fourth set, outside hitter Sofia Kamke kept the Chargers alive with six kills as they battled against the Wildcats point for point until finishing the set 25-23. New Haven fell short 15-12 in the final set. The Chargers had a total of sixty kills and twenty errors. Borton had a striking thirty-one assists and DeAcharan was right behind with twenty-one.
Concluding the tournament, the Chargers faced the Falcons of Bentley University. New Haven fell short 3-1.
In the first set, the Chargers started with an early lead and ended with an eight-point advantage over the Falcons, 25-17.The second set was a back-and-forth rally between theChargers and the Falcons untilBentley came out on top, 25-23.In the third set, the Chargers had four attack errors, resulting in Bentley finishing 25-20. Inthe final set, the Chargers triedto stay alive with a seven-point lead, but the Falcons fed off a spree and finished 25-22. New Haven finished with 57 kills, led by Kamke with 14, Peyton Mast and Juergens right behind with 10, and four other players contributing. DeAcharan ended the match with 19 assists and Borton with 17. The Chargers tallied 17 errors countered to the Falcons 22.
Wrapping up the Sandy Hoffman Memorial tournament, the Chargers now stand 1-5 overall. New Haven next takes the court at 7 p.m. on Tuesday to face Bridgeport University.
