The women’s tennis team beat the Jefferson University Rams, 6-1, in their spring opening match last week, after nine matches, three doubles and six singles. In the fall season, the Chargers went undefeated and won their first Northeast 10 Championship under head coach Chris Raffone.
Senior Karim Carreras and junior Valentinna Ferrarini competed in the first doubles and beat the Rams’ Nicole Hrbkova and Anna Morgillo, 6-3. In the second doubles match, senior Risako Umekuni and freshman Victoria Togores faced Jefferson’s Emily Frost and Rose Huang and won 6-2. The freshman duo, Laura Ortner and Leni Bischof were set to compete in the third doubles match but collected a win by forfeit from Jefferson.
New Haven had an all-around victory in the singles matches. Ferrarini led the way for the Chargers when her match against Hrbkova went into three sets. In the first set she won 6-4, fell short 4-3 in the second set and then won by opponent retirement in the third. In the second singles match, Carreras faced Morgillo and won 6-4 and 6-1, respectively. Umekuni kept the win streak alive as she defeated her opponent, Huang, 6-4 in the first set followed by a 6-0 shutout in the second set.
In the fourth singles match, Togores faced Zenia Barretto and won 6-2 and 6-0, respectively. Ortner went up against Frost in the fifth singles match and won the first set 6-3 and the second set 6-1. Sophomore Agustina Ravera won by forfeit in the sixth singles match.
The Chargers went on to face the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) Firebirds and won the match, 5-2.
After the win against Jefferson and UDC, New Haven has an overall record of 12-0 and 8-0 in conference play. The Chargers will be back in action Friday when they face the Providence College Friars.
