Coming out of a win after their Tuesday match against Caldwell University, the Chargers were looking to keep things rolling as they took on the Assumption University Greyhounds this past Friday, Sept. 20 under the lights at Kathy Zolad Stadium with an outstanding atmosphere with 282 spectators.
New Haven kicked off with an outstanding start scoring a goal. Sophomore Janayah Body led the Chargers with a goal in the first minute of the game, giving New Haven a 1-0 advantage. Midfield Ashlee Crumrine was the only other Charger to take an attempted shot during the first period but couldn’t make it past Assumptions goalkeeper, Frida Larrson.
Chargers goalkeeper Caitlin Daley was the key piece for New Haven as she blocked four shots out of the 12 attempted shots the Greyhounds targeted in the first 45 minutes. Entering halftime, New Haven tallied two fouls countered to Assumption with four of their own.
As the next half began, both teams came out with a good rhythm, creating pressure on the field. New Haven kept their lead and continued to defend and hold the Greyhounds from scoring. Right as it looked to be a win for the Chargers, in the last final minutes Assumption found the back of the net making the score 1-1.
A shot by Greyhound Rachael Geniuch was hit at the crossbar and bounced back on play in front of Assumption’s Ashley Wenzel who headed the ball into the back of the net. This was the first goal that got past Daley after Assumption took another 12 attempted shots in the second period.
New Haven finished the game with only three attempted shots, two of which were on goal while the Greyhounds had a striking total of 24 shots, with ten of those on goal. In the 90 minutes of play, Daley had nine saves countered to Larrson with just two. The Chargers tallied eight fouls during the match while the Greyhounds committed a total of ten. Sophomore Emma Mitchell was the only player to receive a yellow card throughout the entirety of the game.
After the tie against Assumption, New Haven now has an overall record of 3-2-1. The Chargers are scheduled to return at 4 p.m. on Tuesday as they will be taking the road to face the Adelphi University Panthers. The match will be held at Motamed Field in Garden City, NY.
