Last Tuesday, the Adelphi University Panthers beat the Chargers who traveled to Garden City, New York, to face the Panthers.
The Panthers had a strong offensive start with a series of five attempted shots in the first 20 minutes of play. Carly Issing led Adelphi with the first attempt of the game, but couldn’t make it past the Charger’s goalkeeper, Caitlin Daley.
The next attempt was made by the Panthers Sarah Kent, but Daley saved the shot at bottom center. Issing added two more attempts along with one from Kayleigh Goodrich but all three were shot out top. Sophomore midfield Emma Mitchell took the first attempt for the Chargers, but the shot was out right. Adelphi’s Alexa Piotrowski countered the shot with one of her own, but went out top.
Nearing the end of the first half, sophomore forward Lola Wood took an attempted shot but couldn’t make it past Adelphi’s goalkeeper, Peyton DeRouen. Entering halftime, New Haven only took two attempted shots, while Adelphi took seven, two of which were saved by Daley. The Chargers tallied four fouls, and the Panthers were right behind with two of their own.
Starting the second half, freshman forward Grace Simpson made an attempt, but the shot went out right. The Panthers’ Issing and Goodrich took back-to-back shots but couldn’t make it past New Haven’s defense.
Following a corner kick, the Panthers’ Madison Apicella scored the first and only goal of the game off an assist from Goodrich, which put Adelphi at a 1-0 advantage. Goodrich tried to add to the score with two of her own shots but missed both. Senior forward Vickie Fleming took an attempt at goal but couldn’t reach the back of the net.
Adelphi’s Goodrich and Alexis Hellman had four shots back-to-back, and Daley saved one at goal. Simpson added another shot attempt for the Chargers, but DeRouen saved it in the bottom center. Adelphi’s Lola Kochanskyj took the final shot attempt for the Panthers, but Daley saved the shot in the bottom left corner. With three minutes remaining, sophomore defense Janayah Body took a shot at goal but hit the left side of the goal frame.
New Haven finished the game with only six attempted shots, three of which were on goal while the Panthers had a total of 18 shots, with eight on goal. In 90 minutes of play, Daley had six saves countered by DeRouen with three. The Chargers tallied five fouls throughout the match while the Panthers had six.
After the loss to Adelphi, the Chargers traveled to Waltham, Mass. on Saturday to face the Bentley University Falcons. The Falcons defeated the Chargers, 1-0.
Sydney Deroche scored the first and only goal of the game for the Falcons. Bentley ended the game with a total of 29 attempted shots, 12 of which were on goal. New Haven only took five attempted shots, with three being on goal. Forwards Grace Simpson and Vickie Fleming led the Chargers with two attempted shots each. Adding the final attempt was midfield Antonia Henao. During the 90 minutes of play, New Haven’s goalkeeper Caitlin Daley had nine saves while the Falcon’s Claire Ewen finished with three saves.
After the loss to Adelphi and Bentley, New Haven has an overall record of 3-4-1 and 0-2-1 in conference play. The Chargers next kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Wednesday as they will travel to Dobbs Ferry, New York to face the Mercy University Mavericks. The game will be held on Mercy Field.
