After a strong 3-0 win over Felician University, the Chargers hosted their rival, the Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) Owl’s on Saturday. With a strong defensive fight from New Haven, the Chargers won 2-0.
SCSU put New Haven to the test as the Owl’s had 12 total shot attempts in the first half. Five of these shots were saved by the Charger’s goalkeeper, Caitlin Daley. New Haven only had three shot attempts during the first half, two of which were attempted by Riley Drosopoulos. Midfield Emma Mitchell shot the final attempt and was able to put the ball in the back of the net with only a few minutes remaining. Midfield Ashlee Crumrine assisted Mitchell off a corner kick, giving the Chargers a 1-0 advantage going into halftime.
After the intermission, the Owls came out strong again putting Daley and the Charger’s defense at test. SCSU had a total of 24 shot attempts in the second half, five of which were saved by Daley on goal. New Haven tallied up five shots in the second half and Lola Wood added to the Charger’s advantage with only two minutes left in the game. With an assist by Grace Simpson, Wood shot the final goal of the game, putting New Haven’s score at 2-0.
New Haven finished the game with a total of eight attempted shots, three of which were on goal. SCSU countered with 26 total shots, 10 attempted goals. Daley finished the 90 minutes of play with a total of 10 saves, denying every goal that the Owl’s tried to put in the back of the net. SCSU’s goalkeeper Kaelen Fabry finished the match with only one save. During the match, the Chargers had six corner kicks, while SCSU countered with eight.
The Owl’s had a total of three fouls during the game while the Chargers tallied six total. SCSU’s Angela Filosa and Riley Ayer both received yellow cards, while Angelina Schilling only drew one for the Chargers.
After the rivalry win, New Haven now stands 2-2 overall. The Chargers next kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Tuesday as they host the Cougars of Caldwell University. at the Kathy Zolad Stadium. For more information, visit NewHavenChargers.com.
