After pulling ahead early, the New Haven lacrosse team lost to the Adelphi University Panthers, 11-8, last week.
At the end of the first quarter, New Haven led by three but could not hold on in the second half as the Panthers stormed back and outscored the Chargers 6-2. This breaks a four-game winning streak for New Haven.
“It was a tough game and there is a lot to learn from it, however, we definitely had positives too,” said midfielder Katie Schenk. “We exemplified great teamwork and supported each other through the game and we need to keep that moving forward.”
Schenk led the way for New Haven by scoring twice in the first half. She added another goal to tie the game in the fourth quarter. Two of Schenk’s goals were made from free-position attempts. Along with her three goals, Schenk secured an assist in the second quarter to attack Caitlin Seleny. Seleny scored two of her own in the first half.
Midfielders Gianna Caprioli, Ivanna Hernandez and attack Camryn Antler all scored once for New Haven. Caprioli and Antler’s goals were made from free-position shots. Caprioli added a team high six ground balls.
Schenk’s assist was the only one for the Chargers, while the Panthers totaled two assists, both in the first half.
The Chargers dominated in the circle as they gathered 14 of the game’s 22 draws. Schenk and midfielder Cypress Levitt each drew in five, while midfielder Summer Castiglione finished the game winning four. Goalkeeper Gabby Buscemi stopped nine of 20 shots during the game.
Turnovers proved to be costly for the Chargers as they turned the ball over 21 times with 21 coming in the second half as Adelphi came back to steal a crucial Northeast-10 (NE-10) matchup between two of the top three seeded teams in the conference.
The Chargers also had seven free-position shots while Adelphi had four. Both teams tallied three total penalties during the match.
With the Northeast-10 (NE-10) Championship games coming up, Schenk said her team needs to stay connected and work for one another.
“Playing for the person next to you can help us succeed in future games,” said Schenk.
New Haven stood at 9-5 and 6-3 in NE-10 play following the loss. After a 13-10 win on Saturday against Franklin Pierce University, the Chargers moved to five games over .500 on the season and 7-3 in conference play.
They will go on the road to Colchester, Vt. on Wednesday for their final regular season matchup against Saint Michael’s College, currently ranked 10th in the NE-10. New Haven is ranked third in the conference in the midst of their strong season as they look to go into playoffs with a win before the quarterfinals.
