Last weekend, New Haven’s women’s golf team finished second in an 18-hole Par 72 course at Blackstone National Golf Course.
Graduate student Wynter Flores said that before playing in the conference championship, they had a busy schedule of three tournaments prior.
“Each tournament we played in we faced teams in our conference so it gave us a good look of where everyone was as a team before the conference,” said Flores. “Our coaches were great in having our practice specialized to each of our games where we needed to focus as an individual golfer to improve.
Senior Erin Earl led the way for the Chargers, and finished in second place. In the first round, Earl carded 73 (+1) and finished the second round 78 (+6). Earl was one shot behind first place, and ended with an overall score of 151 (+7). Flores finished right behind Earl, and tied for third place overall with Franklin Pierce’s Kesinee Prukmathakul. In the opening round, Flores scored 73 (+1) and completed the second round 80 (+8), with a combined score of 153 (+9).
Sophomore Isabella Thomas carded 77 (+5) in both rounds and finished with a score of 154 (+10), which put her in a tie for fifth place alongside the Ravens’ Beatrice Dietz. Junior Danielle Jastrab tied for 13th place with Saint Anselm University’s Lydia Tufts. Jastrab finished the tournament with a combined score of 164 (+20) after carding 80 (+8) in the first round and 84 (+12) in the final round. The final Charger competing in the tournament was sophomore Sophia Silva tying for 16th place with Samantha Tinsley from Assumption University. Silva carded 83 (+11) in both rounds and finished with a score of 166 (+22).
New Haven finished the tournament with a combined team score of 621 (+45). The Chargers were nine shots behind the championship leaders, Franklin Pierce.
As the fall season is coming to a close, Flores said that the team still has a game plan to individually focus on areas where improvement may be needed. With the final tournament approaching, she said that it will be a good competition to see what the team has to do in the spring to be eligible to receive an invitation to regionals.
New Haven will compete in two more invitationals to finish the fall season. The Chargers will travel to Worcester, Mass. to compete in the Holy Cross Women’s Golf Invitational beginning on Oct. 21. The invitational will be held at Worcester Country Club. For more information, visit NewHavenChargers.com.
