WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women’s soccer team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference match Sunday afternoon 1-2 to Stonehill College. The Chargers fell to 6-7 overall and 4-7 in conference play with the loss, while the Skyhawks improved to 8-4-2 and 6-3-2 in the NE-10.
New Haven and Stonehill opened the game very even, but a Skyhawk corner kick in the 16th minute found the foot of Kelsey Mahoney who sunk the ball in the back of the Chargers’ net. Trailing 0-1, New Haven recorded five shots before evening the game at 1-1 off a Brenna Weidman (Holliston, Mass./Holliston / Utica College) goal. She received the ball from Courtney Marra (New Fairfield, Conn./Immaculate) just inside the 18-yard box and after one touch evened the score. The second half was much of the same story for both teams. Despite neither team scoring, the Chargers again outshot their opponent, 8-to-4. At the end of regulation, the game remained in a 1-1 tie heading into overtime.
The first overtime featured three shots from New Haven and two from the Skyhawks. Both teams had their opportunities but could not capitalize. At the 94th minute, Amber Simms (Southport, England/Southport) had a shot on goal that was saved and with a minute and 35 seconds remaining, Kim Taylor (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford ) saved a Stonehill shot which eventually forced a second overtime.
In the second overtime, both teams accounted for two shots each until the Skyhawks knocked in the game-winning goal at the 103rd minute from Renee Trudeau.
Despite the loss, the Chargers outshot Stonehill 22-to-12. Taylor recorded six saves in a losing effort and Weidman, Shannon Morales (Bloomfield, Conn./Northwest Catholic) and Simms all recorded two shots on goal.
