WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Amber Simms (Southport, England/Southport) of the University of New Haven women’s soccer team carried the team to a 1-0 victory over Northeast-10 foe, Saint
Anselm on Saturday. Simms scored the only goal of the game as the Chargers improved to 4-3 overall and 3-3 in league play. The loss drops the Hawks to 1-5-1 and 1-4-1 in the NE-10.
The first period featured 11 total shots as the game went back and forth throughout the 45 minutes of play. New Haven outshot their opponent seven to four as the Chargers got on the board at the 24:01 mark on Simms’ goal.
New Haven missed two opportunities towards the end of the half to increase their lead by two. Simms just missed a shot wide and Tami Vargas (Vernon, N.J./Vernon) hit the post seconds later. Despite the team’s chances, New Haven held a 1-0 lead at the break.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the second period. The Hawks took three shots compared to the Chargers’ two but weren’t able to put one past Kim Taylor (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford ). The senior goalkeeper stopped three shots to earn her second shutout of the season as the Chargers claimed a 1-0 win.
Simms had three total shots, two on goal and was unassisted on her score. Lauren Primovic (Avon, Conn./Avon ), Shannon Morales (Bloomfield, Conn./Northwest Catholic) and Nicole Pacapelli (West Haven, Conn./West Haven / Stonehill College) each had a shot on goal.
New Haven returns to action on Wednesday, September 28 for a road contest against AIC. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
