Over the past couple weeks, there has been a change in the weather over the Midwest that has brought rain, storms, and tornadoes. A strong low pressure system moved from South Dakota to Northern Wisconsin on Sunday, which moved in warm, moist air followed by a cold front producing severe storms. This then created a possible seven tornadoes, which could be record breaking, officials stated.
Rich Mamrosh, meteorologist for the NWS said, “It’s one of the most significant tornado outbreaks in April. If confirmed, the number of tornadoes on Sunday could have broken a record for a single day in April, which was previously six.”
A tornado in Merrill in the northern portion of the state caused widespread damage to businesses and homes, where people needed to be taken to local hospitals. Another storm destroyed over half the town of Mapleton, but left no serious injuries.
There were also storms in Texas with a major hail-storm in Prosper, where golf ball sized hail poured from the sky and left many cars with tremendous damage, along with many houses and businesses missing windows and fences. After the storm front, the weather changed to unseasonably high temperatures, with a new high record of 91 degrees on Saturday.
