WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven football team hosted its annual spring football game on Saturday, April 21 at Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. With fourth quarter heroics, the white team came-from-behind and defeated the blue team by one point, 7-6, with help from a fourth quarter pass and catch by Ronnie Nelson (Stuart, Fla./South Fork ) to Mike DeCaro (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay ).
The blue team scored the opening points in the first quarter on a long touchdown strike from Ryan Osiecki (Seymour, Conn./Seymour / Univ. of Louisville) to wide receiver Mike Friello (North Haven, Conn./North Haven). The defenses then took over and neither team scored for a majority of the second, third and fourth quarters.
The only other score of the game, came with under 30-second left in the fourth quarter when Nelson was flushed out of the pocket and found DeCaro down the left sideline for a long gain inside the blue team’s 15-yard line. Nelson then hit Demetrius Washington-Ellison (Rahway, N.J./Rahway / Univ. of Maine) in the front corner of the endzone to tie the game at 6-6 with under 20-seconds left. Chris Scifo (Coral Springs, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas / Central Connecticut State University) completed the extra point for the white team and sealed the victory.
