(09-16-09) OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The University of New Haven women’s volleyball team defeated New York Institute of Technology 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-19) Wednesday night. With the win the Chargers improve to 6-3 on the season. The loss drops NYIT to 4-4.
The Chargers took a quick lead on Wednesday by scoring 10 of the first 15 points. They continued to lead by five points for a majority of the opening set. They led by as many as eight (23-15) before taking the 25-18 victory.
In the second set, UNH gradually built upon an early lead, which turned into 14-11 lead midway through the set. The teams exchanged point-for-point through most of the remaining set. NYIT went on a two-point run after the Chargers took a 23-18, but UNH sealed the victory with two unanswered points to take the 25-20 victory.
A 10-5 UNH lead in the final set, paved the way for the Chargers to take set three by a score of 25-19. The Chargers opened a six-point 16-10 lead off a NYIT service error, before mounting a comeback. NYIT came within one point (18-17) of the Chargers later in the set, but UNH sealed the win wth a late surge.
Keidy Candelaria led the way for the Chargers with 13 kills (one error) on 21 attempts (.571 hitting percentage). She also added 12 defensive digs and one block. Sara Malmlov registered 12 kills on 28 attempts, while Elizabeth Akinbiyi tallied 10 kills on 18 attempts.
Chelsey Alpough handed out 38 assists, while Heather Ladao grabbed 10 digs.
The Chargers host Holy Family on Friday at Charger Gymnasium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
