On Friday, the Chargers hosted a double header against the Dominican College Chargers and the Bloomfield College Bears. With a complete shut out against both teams, New Haven went 6-0 for the night.
The double header began with a face-off between the Chargers and a strong offensive start in the first set from Dominican, which put them 4-0. New Haven followed with a four-point run of their own which started from outside hitter Sofia Kamke. The pair of Chargers rallied back and forth until New Haven held the lead for the remainder of the set and finished 25-18. New Haven finished the first set with 13 kills, led by Kamke.
The New Haven Chargers were in a deficit twice during the second set until securing the win, 25-22. Opposite side Peyton Mast led New Haven with five kills out of the 13 during the set. Dominican had 11 kills, six coming from Elizabeth Perez. In the final set, New Haven took an early lead and called game 25-27, securing their first win of the night. New Haven finished the match with a striking 39 kills, compared to Dominican with 28 of their own. Thirty of these kills were assisted by Borton.
After the win over Dominican, the Chargers had an easy sweep over the Bloomfield College Bears. Starting the first set, New Haven had an eight-point advantage following kills from middle blocker Amber Williams, Mast, and outside hitter Grace Juergens. The Chargers dominated offensively and won the first set 25-9. New Haven kept their momentum going as they finished the second set 25-9.
The Chargers had 15 kills between Williams, opposite side Lauren MacKellar, middle blocker Katherine Rank, outside hitter Kaylee Weeks, and Juergens. The Bears earned seven of their points from the Chargers attack and service errors. The Chargers called the game and won the third set 25-6, with seven service aces and 12 points off the Bears errors.
Following a complete sweep during the Charger’s doubleheader, New Haven faced the Holy Family University Tigers on Saturday. New Haven closed their shutout with a 3-0 victory.
In the first set, the Chargers tallied 13 kills compared to the Tigers with only six kills. Holy Family finished the set with seven errors while New Haven had three. The Chargers totaled 10 kills during the second set and finished with no errors. The Tigers had five kills with nine errors. In the final set, New Haven had 13 kills while Holy Family had six of their own.
New Haven finished the game with 36 kills, led by Jeurgens with 12. Holy Family had 17 kills with Kalia Espenlaub leading with six. The Chargers finished with 34 assists, 22 from Borton. Holy Family finished with 20 errors and New Haven had nine.
After a complete sweep of the tri-game weekend, the Chargers have an overall record of 7-6. New Haven will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday as they travel to Rockville Centre, New York to face the Molloy University Lions. The game will be held at Quealy Gymnasium.
