University of New Haven students and graduates were among the Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists college contest winners announced last Thursday. According to their website, the contest highlights “the best work published or broadcast during the 2019-20 academic year.” University students Anna Downs, Mia Steadman, Jennifer Korn, and Ilisabeth Beaudry were among the students recognized for their work in collegiate journalism

Former editor-in-chief and class of 2020 graduate, Downs, won first place in the Page 1 Layout category for the May 5 edition of the Charger Bulletin. The front page featured a photo of the steps leading to Harugari Hall and the headline “Accessibility On Campus,” another award-winning piece.

Korn, former student life editor and class of 2020 graduate, and Beaudry, current student life editor and rising senior, collaborated on “Student with wheelchair speaks out about campus inaccessibility.” Korn and Beaudry’s article won third place in the General Reporting category. The article covered a student with a neuromuscular disease and her battle to improve the accessibility and safety on campus.

Steadman, a rising senior, received second place in Editorial Op-Ed for her article, “The problem with staying informed.” The article covered the issues of staying informed, ever-changing information, negative effects of media intake, and more.
