As a journalist, I try to be as impartial as I possibly can when I’m reviewing EPs, albums or shows of people that I personally know. Therefore, I think it’s fair to say that this article is truly how I feel, bias free.
That being said, UNH’s own Kyle Woodworth (K-Woody) released his second project and first EP on Feb. 26, titled, People I’ve Met, and definitely showed that he is chasing his dreams and not looking back.
People I’ve Met, has features from different artists that Woodworth has come into contact with throughout his career, especially during the time of his internship this summer with John Kilmer Studios in NYC.
The EP collectively features mostly appearances by other males in the rap scene today, and two tracks display catchy female hooks (one sung by yours truly). My favorite track is titled, “Roll With Me,” which features one of those solid hooks sung by Simrin Jhangiani. This girl is severely talented and has the type of voice that sends chills up your spine. Her vocals, combined with the romantic rhymes on the verses, make for an amazingly dynamic track. Woodworth not only collabs with producers, constantly working on beats and seeing the entire process through until there is a finished product, but he writes all of his own verses and hooks.
There is a theme to this EP that strays away from the current rap game today. As the listener, you tend to go through the story of Woodworth’s romantic and personal life one track at a time. His rhymes go deeper than that of anything in the rap scene today.
Unlike most popular rap artists, he tries to convey real life experience so that people can truly relate to his words and feel something deeper than just the beat of the bass.
If you have listened to some of Woodworth’s earlier tracks from his first mixtape, you will be able to tell very quickly that he as grown immensely as an artist. It is almost like he has found his nitch and now no one can hold him back or stop him from reaching new heights.
The song on the EP that I think will hit most listeners the hardest is “The Reason,” about a young girl from Woodworth’s hometown who was in a major car accident on junior prom night. You can tell just how much this song really means to him. The track features two artists from New Jersey, one named RAJA on the hook, and the other IOU on the second verse. This is the deepest of all the tracks on the EP, with emotional lyrics that really hit home and brought tears to my eyes the first time I heard them. I can honestly say a rap song has never evoked such emotion in me before, and I think with his genre that is something that is very difficult to do.
People I’ve Met is available on College-Of-Music.com and I highly suggest checking it out. I can promise you that you won’t only be able to listen to it just once. I can honestly say that this EP has some tracks that outdo those on Billboard charts today. Do yourself a favor and check out this amazing up-and-coming artist, and I guarantee you’ll love his EP as much as I do.
