The university community was recently stricken with tragedy over the loss of one of its own during winter break. On Saturday, January 8,
Christopher Harris was found unconscious and unresponsive in his home around 9 a.m. Police and paramedics arrived, rendered emergency aid, and transported Harris to Stamford Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police are currently investigating the death of the Riverside, CT resident, pending the results of an autopsy.
Born on March 2, 1992, Christopher Harris, 18, graduated from Greenwich High School in 2010 and was a freshman Music and Sound Recording major at the University of New Haven. Christopher Harris Sr., his father, noted that “Chris was an avid music lover” and had been “thrilled to go to UNH” to learn about music engineering. Harris had a studio at home and both wrote and performed music. He had also played football and rugby in High School.
Mere hours after his passing, Harris’ Facebook page filled with hundreds of posts from friends expressing their sadness, saying their goodbyes, and offering their condolences. The number continues to grow every day. Mother, Karen Harris, noted that “he had a big heart, always smiled, and had a wide circle of friends.” Harris also had one younger sister, Emily Harris, who was among those who commented on his Facebook page.
A wake was held on Friday, January 14 at Leo P. Gallagher & Sons in Greenwich, CT, followed by a funeral service on Saturday January 15 at the First Congressional Church of Greenwich. Dr. Kaloyanides, the chairman of UNH’s Music Department, attended the wake and spoke to Harris’ family, who expressed how comforting it was to see all the support and condolences from the UNH community. A memorial scholarship in Harris’ name is in the process of being established and plans for a candle-light vigil are being made.
From his friends in High School to the university community, it is clear that Christopher Harris will be remembered and missed by everyone who knew him.
