WEST HAVEN, Conn. – On Saturday, February 18 the University of New Haven men’s basketball program will be celebrating five decades of tradition at its final home game of the 2012 regular season. The Chargers will be recognizing their 50th anniversary of men’s basketball with a halftime salute to the 1961-62 team and a postgame reception.

The father of Charger Athletics and UNH Athletics Hall of Famer, Don Ormrod, along with members of the first team, will be honored during halftime. Ormrod was the first head coach and Director of Athletics at then New Haven College. Following the game, alumni and friends will gather at the German Club on main campus for a reception. “Throughout the past 50 years, there have been many student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans that make this a special year for the men’s basketball program,” said Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics Deborah Chin. “We’re grateful for the many people who have created the foundation and formed the rich history and tradition of Charger Athletics. I hope you will join me on February 18th to celebrate the outstanding achievements and accomplishments of the past 50 years.”

Ormrod spearheaded the creation of the New Haven Department of Athletics when he was a member of the physical education department and men’s basketball program in 1961. With over 700 wins and nearly 300 alumni today, the men’s basketball program is one of the most storied in Charger Athletics history. Assisted by long-time baseball coach Frank “Porky” Vieira, Ormrod spent six years building the foundation of Charger Athletics as head men’s basketball coach. During that time, Ormrod also helped create the New Haven baseball, men’s soccer, men’s track and men’s tennis programs, while guiding the men’s basketball team to a remarkable 146-22 record.

In the team’s first-ever varsity game, the Chargers defeated Mitchell College 94-45. UNH Athletics Hall of Famer Mel Horowitz scored 543 points in 19 games that season and led the Chargers to the Southern Connecticut Small College Conference Championship. In his first season, Ormrod coached the 10-man roster to a very successful 15-5 record.
