This Twisted Thursday’s event was glass painting and hosted by the Black Student Union. The Black Student Union (BSU) aims to promote awareness of the African American culture on campus but they also do social events to unite the campus. Some major events include Save a Breast, Sankofa Benefit Concert and Sankofa Ball.
Save a Breast is hosted by BSU, but also is co-sponsored by 25 other campus organizations. The event happened this past weekend. In February to celebrate Black History Month they do events every day of the month. One of the most popular events they host is the Sankofa Benefit Concert.
The last major event is the Sankofa Ball which is a dinner for all alumni. Alumni come back for Black and Latino Alumni weekend which is a weekend full of fashion shows, step shows, BBQ’s and the ball. BSU is not exclusively for African American students they are a very diverse group that is much more like a family than a club.
One of the clubs most active members Jeanny Francois said, “BSU to me is my escape, my source of laughter, and source of comfort. BSU is my safe space. I joined as a freshman, and I have been in this organization since then, so I have seen BSU evolve the past four years. I remember my freshman year and some of the events BSU had to the events we have now and the difference is pretty amazing.”
Club president Mackenzie Upshaw said, “After you’re a member and continuously come out to events it feels like a family rather than a club. I hang out with these people every day not just when we have meetings.”
At Thursday’s event there were various glass cups and jars people could choose from to paint. Cups ranged from shot glasses, to jars, to regular multi-sized cups. Paint pens were also provided.
Sarah Bosco said, “I liked this event because it let me be creative and relax.”
BSU likes to host events like this because they feel a lot of students are turned off by their name. They try and do social events that the whole campus will come out to and enjoy. The event was picked by the president, Upshaw who felt college students needed glassware for their dorms and this way they were able to make it theirs by adding their own touch, style and personality to it.
The turnout for this Twisted Thursday’s event was huge. Every seat at the giant table was filled. The room was filled with creativity and bursting with colors on the glass. Students from every background enjoyed the creativity and friendly atmosphere.
“This event was a good way to unwind,” says Rebecca Wallace.
Dylan Dalessio agreed saying, “It was something fun to do, I really liked it.”
