WEST HAVEN – The University of New Haven women’s volleyball team had three student-athletes receive top Northeast-10 Conference honors. Junior Sara Malmolv was tabbed Player of the Year, while teammates Chelsey Alpough and Keidy Canderlaria were named Setter of the Year and Freshmen of the Year, respectively. All three were also named to the All-Northeast-10 First-Team, while Canderlaria was put on the All-Rookie team. The trio helped lead the Chargers to their second consecutive Northeast-10 Conference Regular Season Championship, including a perfect 15-0 conference record.
Malmolv was a two-time NE-10 Player of the Week. She leads the conference and is 23rd in NCAA Div. II with 3.85 kills per set. The junior also leads the team with a .286 hitting percentage. As an outside hitter, Malmolv has recorded 307 digs for 3.07 average per set – second on the team.
Alpough has been an essential setter for the Chargers this season. The sophomore was a three-time Northeast-10 Setter of the Week. She leads the NE-10 with 9.84 average assists per set and is second on the team with 38 service aces. Alpough posts a .227 hitting percentage, in addition to 2.15 digs per set.
Canderlaria has had a stellar rookie season for UNH. The newcomer received NE-10 Freshmen of the Week nods an impressive six times this season. She leads the team with 53 aces – fifth in the NE-10. Canderlaria averaged 3.29 kills per set – second on the team and seventh in the NE-10. In addition, the freshmen averaged 2.61 digs per set and accumulated 26 blocks.
After a shocking 3-2 loss to eighth-seeded Southern Connecticut State in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship Tournament, the Chargers are putting their NCAA tournament seed in the hands of the selection committee.
