The Yankees have so many positives thus far in the regular season! Pitching seems to be the club’s forte this year, and it definitely is showing in their play time. Many Yankees fans support Javier Vaquez in the fourth spot in the rotation, but he is a mild concern at this point. Phil Hughes almost pitched a no-hitter up in Oakland, throwing seven strong innings, allowing the Yankees to win their fifth consecutive series against the Athletics. The Yankees look to continue their impressive schedule run against the Angels.
Don’t bet against Mike Scioscia’s team. He is currently the best manager in baseball. Even though the Angels are 8-9 and had a difficult series against Detroit at home, the team plays extremely well in their ballpark most of the time.
The starting pitching match ups are exactly the same with AJ Burnett (2-0) facing off against Ervin Santana (1-2). The first game of the series starts Friday at 10:05 a.m. Saturday Andy Pettitte (2-0) will square off against Joel Pineiro (2-1) and Sunday Javier Vaquez (1-2) will face Scott Kazmir (1-1).
One of the key player’s for the Yankees is Nick Johnson, hitting at .207, but he is third in the league with 10 walks. Johnson typically sets up for Mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez, and Robinson Cano. Speaking of Cano, he may be the best offensive player so far, hitting .333 with 4 homers and 11 RBI’s in 15 games. If the Yankees want to win they need to pitch well and stay patient.
The Angels have some talent of their own this year. One of the biggest Yankee’s killers is Howie Kendrick. He is currently hitting .327 with one homer, 8 RBI’s, and a slugging percentage of .455. He has lots of speed, but he has only stolen two bases so far. Kendry Morales is a tough switch hitter to face, hitting .270 with 4 homers and 10 RBI’s. Morales has been the MVP of their team. Of course, the Angel’s Godzilla, Hideki Matsui, is currently hitting .302 with 4 homers and 11 RBI’s, making him their clutch.
The Yankees are 11-4 thus far, and they are looking to finish out the month of April on a strong positive note.
