The movies for this semester have been great picks by the SCOPE Film Committee, and this past week was no different. The movie The Rum Diary was shown in the usual place on the usual days: Bartels Café on Tuesday and Friday. Who wouldn’t want to see a movie with some great actors, a great story line, and of course popcorn?
The Rum Diary follows a journalist, Paul Kemp played by Johnny Depp, as he makes the transition into San Juan, Puerto Rico working for a newspaper. Kemp is a professional writer that is being given tourist pieces and horoscopes from his editor, and feels he is being underutilized. He wants to show the editor that he can do more, but as he tries to prove his worth, he faces challenges that he responds to in an unusual way.
While on his journeys he meets Sanderson, played by Aaron Eckheart, who hires him to “intern” for some investors that are looking to buy an island near San Juan and build a resort. As the movie follows Kemp, who is played by Depp very well, we see him go through some hinky situations and even meet some people who are very like him.
And what is watching a movie without some popcorn? SCOPE’s Film Committee works hard to make popcorn every Friday night for the movie showings. The popcorn is perfect. It’s like being in a real movie theatre.
Watch for more movie showings every Tuesday and Friday; there are more great movies to come!
