Dr. Seuss’ artificial city of Thneedville is so futuristic, even nature has been manufactured. The Lorax is a movie about respecting nature because life without it is no fun.
Audrey, voiced by Taylor Swift, is a beautiful young teenager who wants nothing more than to see a tree that isn’t mechanical or mass-produced. Ted (Zac Efron), the young protagonist, has a big crush on Audrey and thinks making her dream come true will help win her heart. In his search to find a real living tree, Ted gets information from his grandmother (Betty White) that just outside of town lives a mysterious creature named the Once-ler (Ed Helms). Supposedly, the Once-ler knows the story of what happened to all the natural trees.
Leaving Thneedville though, is no easy task for Ted. The entire city is pretty much owned by Mr. O’Hare (Rob Riggle) who is an evil entrepreneur. When Thneedville became industrial and the air became hard to breathe, Mr. O’Hare had the idea of bottling pure air, and became the richest and most powerful man around. He doesn’t want Ted to learn about trees, so he does everything possible to stop him. Ted is quicker and smarter than O’Hare’s security forces, though, and continues with his plan.
Ted eventually learns from the Once-ler about the Lorax (Danny DeVito), who is the protector of the trees and all creatures in nature. Ted learns about how all the trees were cut down, against the Lorax’s wishes, and Thneedville was built. Ted becomes obsessed with bringing nature back into his city.
The Lorax is rated PG and is just over an hour and twenty-five minutes long. It can be seen in Imax, 3D, or regular old 2D. It is based on the classic children’s book by Dr. Seuss. The animals are adorable and the animation is fantastic. The Lorax is a definite must-see.
