After a loss against Bentley University this past Wednesday, the women’s soccer team was back in action as they were on the road for the third consecutive time to face the Mercy University Mavericks. But New Haven fell short to Mercy 0-4.
Head coach Laura Duncan made a modified starting eleven with Jordan Galica making her debut on goal for the Chargers.
The Chargers defense did their job by not allowing any goals going in the back of the net. Minutes later Mercy’s Skyler Schwenkler scored the first goal of the game off assists from Alyssa Santiago and Ella Brower. Nearly ten minutes later, the Chargers first attempt of the game was taken by senior Emily Schmidt, but the shot went out left.
As the second half began, the Chargers kept pushing to find the back of the net. New Haven’s Lola Wood and Antonia Henao both took attempts but couldn’t make it past Mercy’s defense. The Mavericks struck quickly again with a second goal by Ana Polychroniades off an assist from Amiah Washington. Minutes later, Ancksu Dixon made a pass to Elizabeth Bowels who scored Mercy’s third goal of the night. As time wound down, Schwenkler scored the final goal of the game which secured the fourth goal of the night for the Mavericks.
New Haven finished the game with four shot attempts, two of which were on goal. Mercy took 23 attempts, with 15 at goal. Sophomore Jordan Galica finished the game with a total of 23 shots on target. The Chargers tallied six fouls compared to the Mavericks with four.
The Chargers also played against the American International College (AIC) Yellow Jackets this Saturday at the homecoming game, and lost 0-1.
The team started strong and had pressure on AIC early, having their best look come from the right wing as Janayah Body on defense made an overlapping run to attack and drive into the 18-yard box. Body got a shot off but was denied by AIC. Going into the half, both teams were level as goalie Caitlin Daley made five saves.
In the second half, AIC built their attack off a corner kick and beat Daley and back post run to score for their team, 1-0. New Haven fought back but would not be able to find the back of the net as they would fall to AIC.
The Chargers will face this Wednesday Oct. 9 as they take on Pace University at Kathy Zolad Stadium in West Haven, Conn.. Kick off is set to start at 4:00 PM. For more information, visit NewHavenChargers.com.
