On Tuesday, the New Haven Chargers hosted the Assumption University Greyhounds for their fifth conference game of the season. After a series of nine matches, three doubles and six singles, New Haven won, 6-1.
Senior Karim Carreras and her doubles partner junior Valentinna Ferrarini have been undefeated for the 24-25 season. Against the Greyhounds, the pair led the way for the Chargers, winning 6-1 in the first doubles match.
“We have the mentality of not giving any point for granted, we fight for every point but at the same time we have so much fun together and that’s what works best for us,” said Carreras. “At the same time, it’s easy because my partner is my best friend, and we enjoy what we do.”
Freshman Victoria Togores and senior Risako Umekuni took their first doubles loss of the season, falling short 7-5. Competing in the final doubles match, freshmen duo Leni Bischof and Laura Ortner finished with a tiebreak score of 12-10.
New Haven had five victories out of the six singles matches. In the first singles match, Ferrarini faced the Greyhounds Laurence Bosmans, finishing the first set 6-4, and 6-2 in the second set. In the second singles match, Carreras fell short to her opponent Caroline Mader, after going into a third set.
Carreras finished 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, respectively. Competing in the third singles match, Umekuni went up against Marie Knispeland finished 6-4 in the first set, and 6-2 in the second set, securing another point for New Haven.
Togores competed against Assumption’s Carolina DeSouza in the fourth singles match and won 6-2, 6-3, respectively. In the fifth singles, Ortner faced Danielle DeSouza and won 6-4 in the first set, followed by a score of 6-2 in the second set.Sophomore Agustina Ravera competed in the final singles match against the Greyhounds Ine Bechle and went into three sets. Ravera had a sweep of 6-0 in the first set, fell short 5-7 in the second set,
Tennis remains undefeated after win against Assumption, 6-1 and won 10-4 in the final set, securing the final point for New Haven.
“The whole team this year is on the same page; we are all pursuing the same goal and that allows us to help and push each other to be better every day,” said Carreras. “Coach Chris played a very big role in this mentality that we all have.”
After the win over Assumption, the Chargers remain undefeated with an overall record of 6-0 and 5-0 in conference play. New Haven will be back in action at 1 p.m. on Wednesday toh ost the Chestnut HillCollege Griffins. The match will be held at the New Haven Tennis Courts.
