Last Tuesday, the Chargers won their final regular game of the season against the Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) Penmen. After a series of nine matches, three doubles and six singles, New Haven shut out SNH, 7-0.
Senior Karim Carreras and junior Valentinna Ferrarini competed in the first doubles and beat the Penmen’s Dajana Abadzic and Zuzanna Krygier, 6-4. This win secured the duo an undefeated regular season in doubles matches. SNHU’s Lois Tsui and Justina Haver defeated senior Risako Umekuni and freshman Victoria Togores in the second doubles match, 6-4. Freshmen Leni Bischof and Laura Ortner competed in the final doubles match against Katelyn Nichols and Nadya Lyekontseva and won 6-4.
In the singles matches, New Haven had an all-around victory. Ferrarini led the way for the Chargers as she faced Haver and won 6-4, 3-0, respectively. In the second singles match, the face off between Carreras and Abadzic went into three sets. Carreras won the first set 7-5, fell short 3-6 in the second, and won 6-3 in the final set, securing the point for New Haven. Umekuni redeemed herself in the third singles match against the Penmen’s Tsui as she won a 7-5 tiebreaker in the first set and followed with a 6-4 win in the second set.
In the fourth singles match Togores faced Krygier and went into three sets. Togores won the first set 6-3 then fell short 4-6 in the second set. Togores was able to break the tie and win 7-5 in the final set, which added another point for the Chargers. Ortner went up against Lyekontseva in the fifth singles match and won 6-3 in the first set, lost 5-7 in the second, and won the match 6-1 in the third set. Sophomore Agustina Ravera was the final Charger to compete in a singles match and went up against SNHU’s Nichols. Ravera won 6-1 in the first set and followed with a 6-0 shutout in the second set.
After the win over SNHU, the Chargers remain undefeated in the regular season with an overall record of 9-0 and 8-0 in conference play.
