Interviews with Ric Baker and Becky Johnson
Office Location: Bartels Hall, Top Floor Rooms 203, 204 and 205
Hours: Mon.-Fri. 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
What can you say about the history of this office?
Originally, the Dean of Students position used to be merged with the Vice President of Student Affairs, which also oversaw Campus Police, Admissions, Facilities and Athletics. As the university grew and the need for a larger staff became apparent, the Vice President and Dean of Students (which is now the Associate Vice President of Student Affairs) positions were separated. Becky Johnson became the Dean of Students in 2003, while Ric Baker was brought on as the Assistant Dean of Students (a new position) in 2007, and is now the Associate Dean.
Who comprises the staff?
The staff of the office consists of Becky Johnson, the Dean of Students, Ric Baker, the Associate Dean of Students, Marie Jackowicz, the office’s Executive Secretary, and two graduate assistants.
What services does the office provide to students?
The Dean of Students Office serves as the main advocate of students on campus through programs and initiatives that provide support to students and assist them in transitioning to and succeeding in the university. The office encourages students to live by the values of the Charger Compact: excellence, responsibility, respect, understanding, integrity, and service. Towards that goal, the Dean of Students Office also serves a disciplinary role on campus through the use of disciplinary sanctions, the Student Conduct Board, the Substance Use Task Force, and other initiatives in coordination with offices such as Residential Life. Lastly, the Dean of Students Office oversees the other offices within the Division of Student Affairs and ensures that all of those offices are equipped to carry out their functions effectively.
Is there anything else you would like students to know?
The purpose of the Division of Student Affairs is to provide students with basic needs (such as food, shelter, medical and psychological care) as well as provide a holistic college experience. The staff within the division also act as “out-of-class educators” since much of the learning that takes place at UNH is outside of the classroom. Lastly, if you ever feel unsafe, have any concerns, or need to talk to someone, you’re encouraged to come to the Dean of Students Office.
