WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven softball team defeated the American International College Yellow Jackets in a pair of games Tuesday afternoon. The Chargers took the opening game 1-0 and recorded an impressive 8-1 win in the nightcap. With the wins the Chargers improve to 11-5 overall (4-0 NE-10) and the Yellow Jackets fall to 9-11 overall (1-5 NE-10).
Game One
The only run in Tuesday’s opening game came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jessica Medina drove in the winning run, which was scored by Chelsea Harold, off a single to center field. That was all the Chargers needed as they won their third-straight conference game to open the season.
The Chargers stranded eight runners on base and the Yellow Jackets left five on base, including two in the top of the seven inning.
Medina tallied two hits, while four other Chargers also recorded hits. Breanne Gleason pitched the complete game for the Chargers and recorded her tenth win of the season. She threw ten strikeouts and allowed four hits.
Game Two
The Chargers trailed before taking the lead in the second game of the day. AIC scored a run in the top of the third inning before the Chargers tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning. The Chargers then erupted with seven runs in the bottom of the seven inning to take an 8-1 lead. UNH scored seven runs on five hits and two AIC errors in the eighth. They also left three runners on base in that inning.
The Chargers left seven runners on base, including three in the seventh, while the Yellow Jackets stranded four on base.
Medina led the Chargers with two RBI off two hits and Amy Nepi went 1-for-3 with a RBI and a run. Eight different players scored for the Chargers in the win. Gleason recorded the win in three innings pitched and two strikeouts.
The Chargers return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host Le Moyne College in a rescheduled doubleheader from Sunday. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
