OAKDALE, N.Y. – The University of New Haven softball team split two games at Dowling College on Sunday. The Chargers dropped
the opener 0-2 to the Golden Lions, but rebounded with a 5-2 victory in the second game. New Haven moved to 7-5 overall, while Dowling moved to 5-6 on the season.
Game One
In the opening game of the doubleheader, New Haven managed just one hit and four total base runners against the Golden Lions pitching of Jessie Stavola. The senior also struck out 13 UNH batters in the complete game shutout. The Chargers’ Alana Wesche (Oxford, Conn./Naugatuck) allowed just four hits and one earned run in the loss.
Freshman Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) recorded the Chargers only hit in the second inning.
Game Two
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Charger bats turned around. In the top of the first inning, UNH tallied two runs off three hits. Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) hit a two-out RBI-double to left field to put the Chargers ahead 2-0. UNH added another two runs off a Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue ) RBI-triple and a Dowling error in the top of the second inning. New Haven held on to a 4-0 lead until the bottom of the third inning. The Golden Lions scored two runs off a two-out homerun by Emily Slack.
Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ) added the game’s final run with a solo homerun in the top of the fifth inning.
In the circle, Kelsey Malloy (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) pitched nearly the complete game for the Chargers. She threw six 2/3 innings for the win, while Alana Wesche (Oxford, Conn./Naugatuck) entered in the seventh to secure a save for the Chargers.
Spivey went 2-for-3 with two RBI at the plate, while Angehr went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run. Francisco also went 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs.
