WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven softball team split a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against Pace
University Sunday afternoon. New Haven dropped the opener 5-4, but took the win in the second game 5-0. The Chargers moved to 9-9 overall and 2-4 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Setters now stand at 14-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
Game 1
Pace took the early lead in the top of the first inning, scoring two runs off of two singles and a double. The Chargers Alana Wesche (Oxford, Conn./Naugatuck) ended the inning with a strikeout. New Haven answered back with a 2 RBI double by Lindsey Courturier, scoring Shannon Angher who collected a leadoff walk in the inning and Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) who had reached first on an error.
The Setters collected another run in the fourth inning, taking advantage of two defensive errors by the Chargers. The run was scored on a single to centerfield. In the bottom of the fourth, New Haven took back the lead scoring two more runs, powered by two homeruns from Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) and Amy Nepi (New Castle, Del./St. Elizabeth ).
The Chargers were unable to hold their lead as the Setters pushed two runs across the plate in the fifth inning. Pace scored on two defensive errors, taking the lead in the sixth inning after scoring off of a double down the left field line.
Junior pitcher Alana Wesche (Oxford, Conn./Naugatuck) suffered the loss after completing seven innings. She faced 34 batters, with seven hits, five runs and three strikeouts.
Game 2
The Chargers battled back to take the second game 5-0 over the Setters. In the bottom of the first, Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue ) led off the inning with a single to third base. She advanced to second on a successful sacrifice bunt by Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ). Angehr scored on a double to left field hit by Lindsey Courturier. Christina Gelardi (Derby, Conn./Derby) also collected a double in the inning.
The Setters were unable to put any runs on the board throughout the game. New Haven collected two more runs in the bottom of the fifth when Courturier put one over the fence, scoring Francisco who had singled earlier in the inning. The Chargers collected their final run in the sixth inning when Angehr singled to centerfield, scoring Nepi who had walked in her previous at bat.
Kelsey Malloy (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) collected the win in the 5-0 win over the Setters. She allowed only one hit and no runs in seven full innings, facing 23 batters and striking out three. Her record improves to 4-4 with the win.
