MANCHESTER, N.H. – The University of New Haven softball team split a Northeast-10 Conference double header Saturday afternoon

when they traveled to Southern New Hampshire University.  The Chargers fell in the opening game 6-8, answering back in the second game to defeat Penmen 16-2 in five innings.  New Haven’s record moved to 20-14 overall while Southern New Hampshire moved to 19-9.

Game One

New Haven took the early lead in the first game, scoring on an error that allowed Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue ) to cross the plate in the first inning, reaching the bases earlier on an infield single.  The Penmen took the lead in the top of the second, scoring four runs on two homeruns.  The Chargers cut the Penmen lead down to one run in the bottom of the third.  Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) collected an RBI on a triple down the left field line, then scored herself on another error committed by the Penmen defense.

New Haven stayed consistent throughout the game, putting up a run each inning through the sixth.  Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) slammed her third homerun of the season, while Amy Nepi (New Castle, Del./St. Elizabeth ) also put one over the fence in the sixth inning.  The Chargers were unable to outlast the Penman, who scored another four runs in the fifth.

Angehr went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI in the first game, while Dianno also had a strong offensive day at the plate with two hits in three at bats with an RBI.  Alana Wesche (Oxford, Conn./Naugatuck) suffered the loss for the Chargers in 4.1 innings pitched.  She allowed eight runs with 10 hits, striking out three batters.  With the loss, her record falls to 11-7.

Game Two

The Chargers came back to dominate the Penmen is the second game, scoring an astounding 12 runs in the top of the fifth inning with 11 hits.  New Haven took the early lead again, scoring one run on a single by Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic).  The game remained scoreless until the third when the Chargers collected another three runs.  Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ) hit one of her two homeruns of the game in the third inning, also scoring Meg Chamoff (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Herricks) who pinch ran for Fisher.

The Penmen scored their only runs in the fourth inning on a two RBI homerun.  New Haven clinched the win in the top of the fifth, stringing together 11 hits in the inning.  Francisco collected her second homerun of the game, while freshman Gilly Childs (Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) posted her first collegiate homerun.  Sadie Redman (Bangor, Maine/Bangor), Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) and Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue ) were among the Chargers to collect hits as well during the inning.

Francisco led the Chargers at the plate, going 4-for-4 with three RBI and two homeruns.  Fisher went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI while Childs also had a big day, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a homerun.  Kelsey Malloy (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) pitched a complete game in the five inning victory, allowing only two runs on five hits.  With the win, her record improves to 7-7.
