SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Paced by 16 points from Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career), the University of New Haven women’s basketball team earned its first win of the season on Sunday at the AIC Tip-Off Classic – a 65-59 triumph over Felician. With her 83rd career victory, Head Coach Jessica Smith became the program’s all-time wins leader.
The Chargers improve to 1-1 on the season, while Felician falls to 0-2.
Smith surpasses Mary Ann Palazzi, who guided New Haven to 82 victories from 1993-00. The Chargers’ seven-year head coach is slated to eclipse Palazzi’s mark of 190 games coached at UNH later this season.
Moore hauled in eight rebounds to go along with her game-high scoring output. Anh-Dao Tran (Webster, Mass./Holy Name) added 15 points, including the three-pointer with 1:57 to go that stood up as the game-winner. Lauren Hebert (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) closed in on a double-double with eight points and a team-leading nine rebounds. Brianna Bradford and Nikita Reddy (Germantown, Md./Germantown) also had eight apiece, Ashley LeBlanc (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) added six and Rykema Stone (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) notched four as all seven Chargers who took the court scored for the second-straight game.
Bradford and Tran were New Haven’s top facilitators with six and five assists, respectively, as the Chargers shot 21-for-54 (38.9 percent) from the floor, 5-for-16 (31.3 percent) from the downtown and 18-for-27 (66.7 percent) from the charity stripe.
Keisha Jean-Louis led Felician with 12 points and 15 rebounds. The Golden Falcons were 23-for-70 (32.9 percent) from the field, 4-for-22 (18.2 percent) from long range and 9-for-13 (69.2 percent) from the free-throw line.
New Haven forced 29 Felician turnovers, including five steals by Tran, which led to 30 UNH points. The Chargers committed 20 miscues that were converted into 22 points by the opposition.
A 26-20 New Haven advantage was the largest margin in a back-and-forth first half that consisted of five ties and 12 lead changes. Led by six points from Moore in the opening 20 minutes, the Chargers went into the intermission holding a 32-29 lead.
The second half began just like the first, with the score knotted for the seventh time at 41-41 with 12:15 to play on a Tran jumper. At that point, the Chargers put together the game’s first extended run, netting a 12-2 advantage over the ensuing 3:56 to open up a 53-43 margin with 8:19 to go.
However, the Chargers’ first run was followed by the first Golden Falcon spurt of the afternoon, as a layup by Shakeema Green tied the score again at 53-53 with 6:10 remaining. Tran broke the deadlock a triple, but Gisell Peguero responded with a trey on the other end. After trading buckets each way, Jac’Quel Sanders put Felician on top for the first time in the second half with a free throw.
The 59-58 deficit held to the 1:57 mark. Once again, it was a three-pointer by Tran, who led the Chargers’ in that department last season, which gave New Haven the lead of good. The Golden Falcons would not score again, and Bradford and Tran each added a pair from the stripe in the final five seconds to round out a 65-59 victory.
After beginning Northeast-10 play at Saint Rose on Wednesday, Nov. 14, the Chargers open the home slate on Sunday, Nov. 18 against Dowling at 2 p.m.
