Twenty-two women from University of New Haven’s colony of Alpha Sigma Alpha spent Saturday, Nov. 14 in Philadelphia for District Day.
Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority is broken up into districts based on where the chapter or colony is located. They bring representatives of each chapter in the district together for a conference once a year.
Nearly 300 sisters of Alpha Sigma Alpha were in attendance. Sisters from the University of New Haven Colony were able to take part in this conference this year, as the sorority is still colonizing on campus.
The event began in one conference hall with all chapter representatives and advisors present. Keynote speaker Brittany White, from Phired Up Productions, talked to the women about being the best version of themselves, and finding their authentic self. White resonated with the UNH women. Junior Kiera Terrell left the presentation remembering the message “you are enough.”
After the keynote speaker, sisters were free to choose a “snapchat” to attend, which was a short discussion in smaller meeting room settings that discussed topics including recruitment, leadership, community in a sorority, academic success, and healthy lifestyle choices.
During lunch, they were able speak with sisters from other chapters on a more informal setting, get up to date with what is happening with Alpha Sigma Alpha across the country, and ways to donate to the ASA Foundation.
The afternoon was split between two educational blocks that covered topics from resume building and interview skills, to recruiting year round, as well as applying ritual in everyday life, and smart money habits and workshops. Presentations were geared towards standards committees, charitable giving, and mentoring.
“District Day was an extremely valuable experience, especially for members of a colony,” Monica Kowalski, a UNH ASA sister, said.
District Day was the opportunity for “sisters from across our district to be able to come together to learn new skills and share their individual experiences and ideas with other sisters,” Kowalski said.
