What: An American in Paris is a musical based on the 1951 movie of the same name. The musical and film are based off George and Ira Gershwin’s music. An American soldier, Jerry, decides to stay in Paris following the end of World War II to become a painter, and becomes struck by a mysterious girl, a beautiful French ballet dancer.
Who: There are six main characters in AAIP. Lise, the French ballerina, is played by Leanne Cope, a former dancer with England’s Royal Ballet. Jerry will be played by New York City Ballet principal dancer Robert Fairchild through March 13, before Garen Scribner (Fairchild’s current cover) takes over full time. Broadway vets Max von Essen and Jill Paice also star.
