Shawn Mendes Releases Two New Singles
In late March, Shawn Mendes changed his social media profile pictures to a light pink and fans knew he was teasing something. Not only did he release his first single “In My Blood” on March 22, on March 23, hours later he released a second single “Lost In Japan.”
“Wanted to give you another song,” Mendes posted to Instagram, in regards to “Lost In Japan.” Fans are freaking out over the two songs, and can’t wait for his third studio album.
In an interview with Billboard, Mendes mentions how he was excited to release two songs back to back.
He said, “On Thursday people are going to think its a rock album, and on Friday they won’t know what’s going on.”
“In My Blood” is a song about anxiety and insecurities. It’s more raw, and emotional compared to his past singles. The song is overall slow with both the bass and acoustic guitars backing him up. Fans took to twitter to express their thoughts on the song. Even celebrities like Camila Cabello and Halsey tweeted about their love for the song. Camila tweeted that it was her favorite song of his so far. Halsey tweeted that the song gave her “Kings Of Leon” vibes and that Mendes nailed the song.
Lyrics include: “Help me, it’s like the walls are caving in. Sometimes I feel like giving up. But I just can’t. It isn’t in my blood.”
In an interview with Zane Lowe, Mendes mentions the inspiration for the song.
“It was kind of something that hit me last year,” Mendes said. “Growing up, I was a pretty calm kid. I knew people who suffered from anxiety, found it kind of hard to understand, and then when it hits you, you’re like, ‘Oh my god, this is crazy.’”
Mendes also added in interview that “In My Blood” was the first song he wrote for his third studio album. In regards to “Lost In Japan,” in an interview with Billboard Mendes mentions how the song came about after having a dream about being lost in a country.
“Lost In Japan” starts off with a funky piano to get you an upbeat mood. An article posted to Variety mentions that the song has Justin Timberlake and Michael Jackson vibes.
The song itself is about Mendes missing a girl who is in Japan and wants to visit her as he can’t get her off his mind. Lyrics include: “Do you got plans tonight? I’m a couple hundred miles from Japan, and I, I was thinking I could fly to your hotel tonight. ‘Cause I-I-I can’t get you off my mind.”
One fan took to Twitter to tweet, “Shawn Mendes really made me go from being an emotional mess with “In My Blood” to feeling the constant urge to get up and dance with “Lost In Japan”, all within 24 hours. He is so powerful.”
Within a day of their release, both songs are currently charting the top of iTunes chart. “In My Blood” is number one, while “Lost In Japan” is number two. In a poll posted to Billboard on March 23, fans picked ‘In My Blood” as their favorite of the two singles.
