The men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams competed at the seventh annual Giegengack Invitational hosted by Yale University.
The meet took place at Yale’s Cox Cage, in New Haven, Ct. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3 and 4. Men’s and women’s events were held both days, and once again the chargers excelled.
On the men’s side on Friday, David Thomas won the long jump with a distance of 7.21 meters and the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.14 seconds. Matthew Jeune placed second in the high jump with a height of 2.04 meters. The men’s distance medley relay placed tenth.
Saturday, David Thomas came back and placed third in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.05 seconds. Winston Reid placed thirteenth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.56 seconds.
Tyler Valalik placed sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 11.98 meters. On the distance side, Matthew Dunham placed thirteenth in the 1000 meter, with a time of 2:35.10.
Friday, Calista Hutchinson won both the high jump and the long jump. Hutchinson jumped 1.65 meters in the high jump, a New England qualifying height, and jumped a distance of 5.43 meters in the long jump. Alesha Chu Foo placed fourth in the high jump with a height of 1.60 meters and ninth in the long jump with a distance of 5.03 meters. Briana Conyers added a fifth place finish in the long jump with a distance of 5.10 meters.
Saturday, Monica Yanez broke the school record she held in the 60 meter hurdles when she finished eighth with a time of 9.53 seconds in the finals. Tiara Mitchell also broke the school’s triple jump record this weekend. Mitchell had held the school record after breaking it at the previous Yale University Collegiate Invitational. Mitchell placed first in the triple jump with a new record distance of 11.68 meters.
Conyers followed right behind Mitchell and placed second in the triple jump with a distance of 11.28 meters. Conyers also ran the 60 meter hurdles and placed eleventh with a time of 9.58 seconds which moved her on to finals where she placed ninth with a time of 9.54 seconds. Conyers also placed tenth in the 60 meter dash with a time of 8.27 seconds.
Along with Mitchell and Conyers jumps, Chu Foo placed sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 10.77 meters, and Alissa Howell placed seventh with a distance of 10.54 meters.
In the distance events, Dominique Stasulli placed seventh in the 1,000 meter run, with a time of 3:03.46. Alejandra Cortez finished seventh in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:29.16, and Danielle Sorrentino ran the mile with a time of 5:32.83 and paced thirteenth.
The Chargers will race again next weekend at the Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University.
