On Thursday March 31, students filled Bucknall Theater for a night of laughs for Kppa Gamma Rho fraternity’s semiannual Say What Karaoke.
This semester was a country theme and contestants were judged on their performance to a song of their choosing for the first round and, if they made the second round, a randomly chosen country song.
Contestants competed for first place prize of a $100 Amazon gift card, second place $50 Jazzman’s gift card, and third place $25 Target gift card. There was also a prize of a $25 Amazon gift card for the most country themed outfit for everyone in attendance, funded by Sigma Alpa Epsilon. Audience members also had the opportunity to win a $25 Amazon gift card with a Snapchat raffle, where they snapchatted KGR and then a name was chosen at random. Everyone who came also got a raffle ticket to be entered for a $100 BestBuy gift card.
Contestants performed for a panel of judges, which included current KGR brother Scott Calhoun, KGR alumnus Brian Carey and President of Rugby Club Antonio Roman. Songs for the first round included “Let Me See Ya Girl” by Cole Swindell, “Low” by Flo Rida, “Antidote” by Travis Scott and “Build Me Up Buttercup” by The Foundations. Judges were entertaining for the audience, even going so far as calling up an audience member who was talking during his time to judge and having her give the score instead of him.
The second round had song selection decided by a roll of a die. Songs performed included “Teardrops on my Guitar,” by Taylor Swift, which was completed only with crowd support, “This is How We Roll” by Florida Georgia Line, which was practically booed off stage by the audience, “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd, and “Before he Cheats” by Carrie Underwood.
Hosts Steve Corrales and Brandon Miller kept the crowd involved throughout the show and led into a dance off to “Uptown Funk” to determine second and third place because of a tie.
The final winners were Nick Dionne in first place, Nash Khairi in second, and Kim Trabulsi and Vanessa Tello in third.
