At approximately 12 a.m. on Monday, April 15, UNH undergraduate students noticed they had the ability to register for fall 2013 classes on the Banner Self Service system, the new class registration system UNH now uses in place of Matrix. Somehow, registration was accidentally released early for everyone using Banner.
Students excitedly rose to the opportunity of registering early, just in case the university decided not to reset the system. However, an even larger group of students were in uproar because of the unfairness it caused for athletes, ROTC, Honors students and seniors who did not know about this glitch or were asleep when registration opened. If the university chose to forgo resetting Banner, many of these students (who are typically given priority registration) would be missing out on class opportunities. Additionally, many seniors and priority registration students still had holds on their accounts, making it difficult to take advantage of the Banner glitch.
Many hopeful students awaited the university’s response to such a predicament, secretly wishing it would not reset Banner since they had already gotten all the classes they desired. Overall everyone was worried about what was fair and what was not.
Today at around 3 p.m. all undergraduate students received an email from the university stating they understand that a mistake was made, and they are postponing registration until Wednesday, April 17.
They stated, “Today at 7 a.m., the Office of Information Technology discovered that the online registration system time controls were not being applied correctly. This allowed fall 2013 course registration to be opened to all students rather than following the pre-determined schedule. The Registrar’s Office and OIT have worked with Ellucian, the software vendor, to correct the problem and will continue to test the system to ensure that all problems have been resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience this caused and appreciate your understanding on this matter.”
The new registration dates are now at 7:01 a.m. on the following dates. Seniors: Wednesday, April 17; juniors: Monday, April 22; sophomores: Wednesday, April 24; freshman: Friday, April 26. Honors students, athletes, ROTC, marching band members, etc were not addressed in this email, but UNH will soon update students as to when they can register as well.
