At the request of the University and the West Haven Police Department, the Department of Transportation has changed the cycle of the traffic light at our main entrance at Boston Post Rd. This was done to increase pedestrian safety.
Previously when eastbound traffic (going toward New Haven) got a red light, westbound traffic (going toward Orange) still had a green light for several seconds to allow for motorists turning left onto campus. Pedestrians seeing the red light for eastbound traffic often assumed that westbound traffic also had a red light and they began to cross the Post Rd.
Currently, both east and westbound traffic get the red light at the same time. At the beginning of the next cycle of the light westbound traffic gets a green light for several seconds allowing for left turns, before eastbound traffic gets the green light.
There were no changes to the pedestrian signals.
