Vanessa Estime ’13, an academic peer mentor in the First-Year Success Center, has one simple piece of advice for students preparing for their first final exams in college: start preparing early.
“It is never too early to start making study guides and flash cards, or asking professors questions about material you do not understand,” said Estime, a legal studies major.
In preparation for her first exams as a college student three year ago, Estime made the library her home away from home. “I spent as much time there as I could and found quiet places to study,” she said.
The FYSC will host workshops on developing a game plan for final exams on Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 6 p.m. and Wednesday, Dec. 12, at 2 p.m. Both workshops will take place in the Bartels Student Activity Center.
Another academic peer tutor, Mina Elias ’14 encourages students to make a plan each day for the subjects and the topics that they will review. “Schedule times into your calendar so that you know exactly when and what you are going to study each day,” he said.
Shawnee Sullivan ’14 said that students can benefit from studying in groups. “This way you can bounce ideas off each other or discuss topics you may not understand,” she said.
Nicolle Paulo ’14 advises students to plan breaks in between studying, refer to previous exams or quizzes and talk to their professors about any specific problems they are having.
“I make sure to read over my notes after every class so I don’t have to cram the night before an exam,” she said.
