Habitat for Humanity was started during the fall semester last year, by a group of 10 to 15 freshmen. We spent the next year recruiting upperclassmen and now have a large group of about 40 members. Our club was formed in the hopes of working with the Habitat for Humanity for the Greater New Haven area. We have now expanded on our original mission of just wanting to help build houses, to doing more community service activities.
In the past year we have held two large events:
• Clothing Drive after Thanksgiving break for students to come and donate their extra clothes, toys, bedding, shoes, etc.
• Tom’s shoes documentary: on Tom’s shoes ‘One Day Without,’ we walked barefoot around campus, raising awareness for the cause. We then showed a documentary made by the founder of Toms shoes.
We will be holding our clothing drive again starting the Sunday that we come back from Thanksgiving break. So watch out for dates and times! This semester we are looking to do walks, beach clean ups and other community service events!
In order to get involved, you can email the club account ([email protected]) or President Matthew Carroll ([email protected]), or just stop by a meeting Tuesdays at 9:15 p.m. in K109.
