Chris Christie is a name that can either make one smile or frown…depending on one’s political affiliation. The New Jersey governor has been the center of much controversy. Whether or not he was going to put his foot in the 2012 presidential elections was one of the biggest controversies in the media most recently. Many critics critiqued the governor for even considering leaving New Jersey after only 20 months in office. Apparently, Christie agrees. At an hour long press conference, he announced his choice to stay by New Jersey’s side. He clearly stated, “I will not abandon my commitment to New Jersey; I will fix a broken New Jersey. I’m proud of the work we’ve done, but I know I’m not nearly done.”
Christie had a playful tone throughout the whole conference. On a serious note, he refused to mention which prominent Republicans were encouraging him to run. Many speculate that Nancy Regan was a huge influence. Christie did however admit that he had spoken to at least one former president about the matter. It’s clear that he had a fair chance at 2012. However, he did hint at his disappointment with certain critics that say that he’s ‘too fat’ to be president. “They further stigmatize people in a way that is really irrelevant to people’s ability to do a particular job,” Christie said.
If Governor Christie would have decided to run, he would have had an extremely wealthy campaign. Wealthy entrepreneurs and supporters from all over the country had been pledging millions into his campaign. On the other hand, money isn’t the only thing that makes a campaign. He would have had to set up elaborate ground games and strategies in order to win.
Towards the end of the hour long press conference, he stated his opinions on President Barack Obama. Even though he mentioned that the country would be better off if Obama turns out to be a one term president, he didn’t state who he thought should be the 2012 Republican candidate. One thing is for sure, Jersey is going to have Chris Christie sticking around for a while.
