NEW HAVEN, Conn. – University of New Haven Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation, Deborah Chin was honored at the 2010 March of Dimes Elm City Legends third annual dinner Monday night at the Omni New Haven Hotel at Yale. One of five honorees at the event, Chin joined former UNH baseball coach Frank “Porky” Vieira as the second honoree from the University.
The Elm City Legends is an event which recognizes the greater New Haven region’s best in sports and community dedication. The event also serves as a fundraiser for the March of Dimes mission, which works to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Over 200 people were in attendance at the event.
This year’s Elm City Legends class als include Scott Burrell (former NBA World Champion and collegiate player at the University of Connecticut), Robert DeMayo (North Haven High School baseball coach), Dr. Richard Diana (played professional with Miami Dolphins, two-sport standout in football and baseball at Yale) and Cathy McGuirk (Branford High School field hockey coach).
Last year’s class of Elm City Legends included Ed Aston (Cheshire High School swimming), Bob Dikranian (Southern Connecticut soccer), Dick Gagliardi (Yale and Hamden hockey coach and Sacred Heart Academy Athletic Director), Dan Gooley (Quinnipiac baseball coach), Jack Siedlicki (Yale football coach), Porky Vieira (University of New Haven baseball) and Anne Worcester (Pilot Pen Tennis Tournament). Honoree legends included Karl Ravech (ESPN broadcaster) and Tommy John (former Major League Baseball pitcher). The inaugural class consisted of: Larry Ciotti (Yale Football Assistant Coach), George “The Coach” DeMaio (News/Talk 960 WELI and ESPN Radio 1300 Broadcaster), Abie Grossfeld (U.S. Olympian and SCSU Gymnastics Head Coach), Gary Moore (Hillhouse High School Track Head Coach), Rand Pecknold (Quinnipiac University Men’s Ice Hockey Head Coach), Joe Tonelli (former University of New Haven Assistant Baseball Coach and former Notre Dame of West Haven Athletics Director), and honorary Elm City Legend Mike Golic (Co-Host of ESPN Radio’s Mike & Mike in the Morning and former NFL player).
