The New Haven men’s and women’s indoor track and field team competed this weekend at the 2012 Terrier Invitational, held at Boston
University, Boston, Mass. The meet took place at the Boston University Track and Tennis center where the women competed on Friday, Jan. 27, and the men competed Saturday, Jan. 28. The chargers went up against many teams at the invite, including Division I.
The meet was split into two days where the men and women ran on different days, with the exception of the Distance Medley Relay, that ran opposite; the women ran Saturday and the men Ran on Friday.
The women had four high scorers who all finished in the top 20 of their event. Alissa Howell placed fourth in the long jump with a distance of 5.09 meters, and Tiara Mitchell, a Rookie of the week for her performance at the Yale University Collegiate Invitational on Saturday January 14, finished seventh in the triple jump with a distance of 11.28 meters. Calista Hutchinson placed 12th in the high jump with a height of 1.60 meters. Ivy Watts earned 13th place in the 400-meter with a time of 57.90 seconds, a personal record for Watts this season.
The men’s team also performed exceptionally at the invitational. Matt Jeune stays undefeated in the high jump this season with a height of 2.04 meters and earned a first place finish at the meet. Kevin Downing ran two sprint events; he placed 10th in the 200-meter dash, with a time of 21.91 seconds, and 15th in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.02 seconds. With these times, Downing has qualified for the New England Championships. David Thomas finished ninth place in the 200-meter with a time of 21.82, and 18th in the long jump with a distance of 6.29 meters. Thomas qualifies for New England’s with his 200-meter time.
The chargers will race again at the Giegengack Invitational hosted by Yale University, at Cox Cage in New Haven, another two day meet, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3 and 4.
