On Wednesday, the University of New Haven women’s basketball team continued its undefeated start to the season with a dominant 63-50 victory over the Pace University Setters. The win improved the Chargers’ record to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in Northeast-10 Conference play, as they controlled the game on both ends of the floor. Despite a strong second-half push by Pace, New Haven’s well-balanced offense and stifling defense proved too much for the visitors, who fell to 1-4 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
New Haven started strong in the first quarter, outscoring Pace 17-8. Forward Aniya McDonald-Perry set the tone early with several layups in the paint, while the Chargers’ defense limited Pace to difficult shots and forced multiple turnovers. The Chargers’ efficient offensive play and relentless defense kept Pace from building any offensive momentum. New Haven extended its lead in the second quarter, outscoring Pace 12-11, and went into halftime with a comfortable 29-19 lead.
Pace showed its best offensive performance in the third quarter, scoring 18 points, but New Haven still managed to maintain its double-digit lead, adding 16 points of their own. Strong individual performances from Pace’s Shanice Sinclair and Katumina Mansaray kept the Setters in the game, but New Haven’s defense held firm, never allowing Pace to cut into the deficit. In the final quarter, New Haven sealed the victory with another solid 18-point performance while holding Pace to just 13 points. The Chargers’ rebounding advantage and efficient scoring in the paint proved to be the difference.
McDonald-Perry was a standout for New Haven, finishing with 12 points and several key rebounds, while forward Paige Cote contributed 14 points and was dominant on the boards. Guard Charlotte Bassett also played a crucial role with nine points, contributing to both the offensive and defensive efforts. New Haven capitalized on Pace’s 20 turnovers, converting many of those into fast-break points. The Chargers committed 15 turnovers themselves, maintaining control of the game from start to finish.
With the win, New Haven remains undefeated at 4-0 and will look to extend their perfect start to the season when they face Assumption on Tuesday, Nov. 26. The conference matchup will take place at 5:30 p.m. in Worcester, Mass. at Laska Gymnasium. For more information, visit New Haven Chargers.com
