New face on the diamond
After a national search, the Chargers softball team has found their new coach, Don Justus after former coach Jen Starek decided to leave the program following the spring season. Justus is the former interim softball coach at the University of Hartford and was named the Chargers new coach on October 18.
Justus also worked as the assistant to Judy Lawes at Kutztown University, one of the winningest coaches in Division II, including a season where the Golden Bears went 52-7. In total, over Justus’ time at Kutztown, the team won 332 games.
He is coming into a program that has a history of winning, and is entering into a season that has been extremely successful.
The Blue and Gold posted a 28-9 record and made it to the East Regional Championship before being sent home from the NCAA tournament. Justus has found himself a team that is loaded with potential, starting at the top with second team All-American pitcher Ava Fitzmaurice who, in 2021 posted a 21-5 record with a 1.05 ERA and a .371 batting average, leading the Blue and Gold.
The Chargers did not lose any players to graduation, which means that the same team from the ‘21 season will return, along with the addition of incoming freshmen and players who opted out of the ‘21 season.
