After a win over the College of Staten Island last weekend, the New Haven Chargers hosted the Southern New Hampshire (SNHU) Penmen on Friday as they looked to keep a win streak alive. The Chargers and Penmen ended with a tie of 2-2.
At the start of the match, the Chargers kept possession of the ball. Only eight minutes into the game, the Chargers opened the scoreboard with a goal from forward Pau Santanach, assisted by midfielder Adam Lindstrom. Shortly after, SNHU tied the game with a goal from Gabriel Castro in the 23rd minute. Both teams pressured throughout the remainder of the first half and entered halftime with a tie of 1-1.
As the second half began, SNHU kept control of the game but that didn’t stop the Chargers from keeping the pressure on offensively and defensively. Halfway through the period, midfielder Sandro Branquinho netted a goal off an assist from Lindstrom, which put New Haven at a 2-1 advantage. In the 88th minute, the Chargers’ midfielder Davide Maiello committed a foul inside the box that caused the referee to mark a penalty as time was winding down. SNHU’s Phillip Herrmann scored the final goal of the game from a penalty kick with under two minutes remaining in the game. The game ended with a draw of 2-2.
The Chargers finished with just five shot attempts, four of which were at goal, while SNHU took 12 attempts and had four at goal. After 90 minutes of play, the Chargers goalkeeper Archie Watts and SNHU’s goalkeeper Preston Neal both finished with two saves. The Penmen committed 17 fouls while the Chargers were right behind with 16 of their own.
After the tie against SNHU, the Chargers stand 9-3-3 overall and 4-2-2 in conference play. The New Haven men’s soccer team will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday as they travel to take on the Adelphi University Panthersat Motamed field in Garden City, New York.
