After coming out from a loss of 1-0 this past Tuesday against Post University, the New Haven Chargers looked to turn things around on Saturday as they hosted the Saint Michael’s College Purple Knights at Kathy Zolad Stadium.
With a filled-to-capacity stadium holding a total of 318 spectators, both teams kicked off with a highly intense pace pressuring back and forth the entirety of the first half. Midfield David Maiello took the first attempt for New Haven, but the shot went out right. Three other Chargers also took attempted shots during the first half while Saint Michael’s had a total of two shot attempts. In the first 45 minutes of play, both teams tallied four fouls.
Nearly three minutes into the second half, the Purple Knights Amos Schramm scored the first and only goal of the game by an assist from Aliou Cisse. Despite Saint Michael’s taking the advantage, this didn’t stop the Chargers from fighting the remainder of the game. New Haven came out strong offensively, but couldn’t make it past the Purple Knights goalkeeper Garrett Smith
Overall, the Chargers collected a total of 11 attempted shots on target, four of which were at goal, while the Purple Knights took five shot attempts, with only two being at goal. New Haven’s goalkeeper Archie Watts only had one save during the game countered by Smith with four of his own.
The Purple Knights collected a total of 14 fouls while the New Haven Chargers had a total of seven. Three Saint Michael’s players, Marshall Butler, Amos Schramm, and Jacob Leone were the only players to receive a yellow card during the match.
After the loss to Saint Michael’s, New Haven now has an overall record of 3-2-1 and 0-1 in conference play. The Chargers will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday as they will take on rival Southern Connecticut State University. The match will be held at Jess Dow Field in New Haven, Connecticut.
